COMFORT WOMEN OF SINGAPORE WALKING TOUR
Mon, 1st May 2023
9am to 11.30am

Comfort women is a subject well-known (and well-spoken) in some countries like South Korea and elsewhere. Today, our focus will be at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road.

In Singapore, this subject may well be taboo – but, really, it isn’t. It happened right here in Singapore too: From Teo Hong Road, all the way to Jalan Jurong Kechil, and all the way down to Pulau Blakang Mati. It even happened smack in the middle of Orchard Road – at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road.

“Sook Ching” is a term well-taught in schools, but “comfort women” is rarely mentioned. Even “infant massacre” receives more exposure – especially on Battle of Singapore tours.

With time, most comfort women have passed on. The world has, but a few of these ageing ladies left. So that we may learn, it is important that we remember those dark days.

Our tour will focus on what happened at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road. On our way, we’ll pay our respect to the late Kim Bok-Dong who once worked as a “comfort woman” right here in Singapore. See video: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=498514923967500

Meet me at 9am, on Mon, 1st May 2023, in front of 313 Shopping Mall at Orchard Road. This tour will end at one of the former “comfort houses” (where soldiers used to take their turn at the comfort women) at Cairnhill Road. It may sound sinister – and unfortunately, it was…
