In 1966, Kandang Kerbau Hospital (KKH), Singapore, hit the world’s highest number of baby births – 39, 835 babies! Even The Guinness Book of Records noticed! KKH kept that record for a good many years. The government, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and I believe many other ministries too, were getting concerned. We were having too many babies than we could handle.

Someone came up with a bright idea. Part of the Family Planning Campaign, the “Boy or Girl – Two is Enough” poster, can now be considered a collector item!

It was hugely popular. It was post-war, people were happy. Many were poor – but they were happy. Singapore was prospering. But over-population was a major concern.

People born between the mid-1940s and mid1960s came to be known as “Baby Boomers”. As time passes, our “baby boomers” are now coming of age. As our country prepares for an ageing society, it is also imperative that we the citizens prepare ourselves mentally and psychologically – that Life and Death are as sure as the sunrise and sunset.

Today, as we suffer from a very severe low birth rate, we must also prepare ourselves for the inevitable day too will pass. I invite you to join me as we do our very first “Bereavement Walking Tour”.

We meet at Toa Payoh MRT, 9am on Saturday, 25th March 2023. Upon alighting and exiting at Toa Payoh MRT, take the escalator at your left and meet me in front of Toastbox.

From there, we’ll take bus service 238 to a bereavement company that will give us an in-depth approach to a subject that need not necessarily be “taboo” or morbid.

Note: Do you know that in some cultures, death is seen as a celebration? And it is also no secret, that, for some intrepid travellers, a funeral procession can be a tourist highlight! The result is a better informed and more prepared society for that inevitable day.
