This tour traces the beginning of Singapore’s tourism industry – back when Singapore Tourism Board was still known as STPB (Singapore Tourist Promotion Board).

Though tourism wasn’t the first priority during the early days, it was never really far from the radar. The highly successful Jurong Bird Park began when Singapore was just beginning to set up its infrastructure.

Even earlier was our Zoo. Our first zoo wasn’t anywhere near Mandai. Indeed, it was at the other end at Ponggol. This tour is an informative, and (dare we say) educational attempt on an academic subject for both our own citizens and especially visiting tourists.

We start at Raffles Place, which seems an unlikely place to start a tour of this nature. But the itinerary will bring us to the heartland at Toa Payoh, where yours truly will try to fine tune another “Heartland Tour”.
