Are you ready for a fascinating story about Tiong Bahru? Most tour guides will sugarcoat the history of this beautiful destination, but I’m here to give you the real scoop – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Tiong Bahru was one of the first areas where the Singaporean government tried to tackle the housing crisis. Although it may look neat and pretty now, the journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. But let’s not dwell on the past – the good news is that Tiong Bahru has a happy ending!
Eng Hoon Street, also known as “Mistress Lane” in the past, has undergone significant improvements to enhance its reputation. The area is lucky that a large part of it has been preserved, including its old architecture, which adds to its rustic charm and nostalgic ambiance.
However, the fate of blocks 18 to 28 along Tiong Bahru Road remains uncertain. If they are demolished, the area may lose its unique character. That’s why it’s important to both residents and tourists, both local and foreign, to preserve these buildings.
So, are you up for an adventure to explore this historical enclave? Let’s meet at the Tiong Bahru MRT station at 9am on Sunday, April 14th, 2024. We’ll start our journey at the atrium’s Toastbox and end our tour at the old Tiong Bahru Market just in time for lunch. Trust me; you won’t regret it!
