Join us for a captivating walking tour through Ang Mo Kio, one of Singapore’s most storied neighbourhoods. As the 7th project by the Housing Development Board (HDB), Ang Mo Kio benefited from lessons learned in earlier estates like Toa Payoh, Tiong Bahru, and Queenstown.
By the time HDB embarked on Ang Mo Kio, they had gained considerable experience, making this estate a standout in many ways. However, the origin of the name “Ang Mo Kio” remains a delightful mystery.
Historically, Ang Mo Kio was a farming area dotted with villages, each with its own endearing nickname. One popular theory links the name to tomatoes, but it’s well-known that tomatoes don’t thrive in Singapore’s climate. Another intriguing possibility is that it refers to John Turnbull Thomson, a notable Caucasian engineer in early Singapore, after whom Thomson Road is named.
For many of our Pioneer and Merdeka generations, the name’s origin – whether tomato, Thomson, or even the numerous bridges in the area – matters less than the rich history it represents. Early settlers had to cross nine bridges between Lorong Chuan and Thomson Road, leading to the nickname “Kow Tiou Kio” (nine bridges).
This tour will take you through the heart of Ang Mo Kio, exploring the vibrant history of the estate. Developed during an era of rapid upgrading, Ang Mo Kio was also a battleground for the video industry, with new cinemas competing fiercely with pirated VHS tapes. We’ll delve into the fascinating clash between these two entertainment giants.
Our journey begins at Ang Mo Kio MRT at 9 am on 27th July 2024. We’ll conclude at the bridge that might just be the namesake of Ang Mo Kio. This bridge, possibly built by the influential John Turnbull Thomson, stands as a testament to the area’s rich heritage.
After the tour, we’ll hop on a bus to either Upper Thomson MRT or Springleaf MRT, both of which boast excellent dining options.
