Join us for a captivating journey through the vibrant history of Arab Street! Meet me at 9am on 2nd Nov 2024 at Bugis MRT (Exit A). You’ll easily spot me with my Tourist Guide badge. From there, we’ll take a short walk to the heart of Arab Street, where the adventure begins.
This walking tour explores the fascinating history of the area, including “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” – aspects of our heritage that some may have forgotten. Arab Street’s story begins with a power struggle between two key figures in Singapore’s history: Sir Stamford Raffles and Major General William Farquhar. Their conflict led Raffles to commission Mr Johnson to create the Raffles Town Plan, which designated Kampong Glam for the Malay community, including the Arabian community.
What started as a simple settlement has evolved into one of the most colourful and culturally rich streets in Singapore. As we walk through Arab Street, you’ll discover its transformation over the years, with its vibrant shops and treasures, from Persian carpets to intricate Aladdin lamps. This street offers a fascinating glimpse into the Arabian influence on Singapore’s culture.
During the evenings, especially on weekends, the street truly comes alive, with the rich Arabian atmosphere filling the air. Together, we’ll explore the exotic flavours of Arab Street’s connection to Singapore, from the famous tales of “Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves” to “The 1001 Nights”.
Our journey will end at Beach Road, where Singapore’s original coastline once stood, leaving you with a deeper understanding of the history and culture that shaped this iconic part of the city.
Mark your calendars for 2nd November 2024, and meet me at Bugis MRT at 9am for an unforgettable experience!
