BALESTIER & WHAMPOA WALKING TOUR
Sat, 6th April 2024
9am to 12pm

Balestier is an older but up-and-coming area. It is expected to become even more popular when the nearby Mount Pleasant HDB Estate is developed. If Balestier continues to improve, it may even become a competitor to Holland Village. Any real estate in Balestier is a good investment.

Currently, Balestier is well-known for its Tau Sar Piah, and it is a foodie’s paradise with countless eateries, each with its own unique selling point. You will never go hungry in Balestier.

On the other end of the area is Whampoa, also known as Hoo Ah Kay, a philanthropist and the first person to import ice from New England into Singapore in the mid-1800s. Walking from Balestier to Whampoa Hawker Centre, you will pass by interesting sights and have the chance to sample local food. Not many people know that Balestier was named after an American, Joseph Balestier, who owned a sugar cane plantation in the area and faced challenges with tigers and other wildlife.

Singapore has an interesting American history that is often overlooked. The first paying air passenger to arrive in Singapore was an American millionaire named Mr. Van Lear Black, who landed at Balestier Plain on June 29, 1927, at 11 am.

If you are interested in exploring Balestier, you can meet at Novena MRT on April 6, 2024, at 9 am. Proceed to Meeting Point A, which is to your left after exiting the station. The tour will end at Whampoa Hawker Center, where you can enjoy a variety of lunch options, such as the Teochew Beef Noodle stall.
