Back in the early 20th century, the mere thought of purchasing a house atop a former graveyard was dismissed by many. Ghost stories whispered through the streets, especially around Bishan MRT station, perpetuating the eerie reputation. When news spread that Kampong San Teng would evolve into Bishan HDB Estate, skepticism hung in the air.
In 1958, Mr Tan Choon Keng defied the odds, proving that being close to a former graveyard wasn’t ominous. His legacy lives on as the founder of “CK Tang,” a business that flourished beside a former Teochew graveyard—now the prestigious Ngee Ann City. Yes, the glamourous Ngee Ann Building stands on what was once a Teochew Cemetery.
Today, Bishan stands tall, having shed its ghostly past to become a sought-after HDB housing hub, with flats fetching over $1 million. The rural landscape, with its villages and graveyards, has given way to progress.
