BUGIS STREET WALKING TOUR
Sun, 28th July 2024
9am to 12pm

Discover the Hidden History of Bugis Street

Join us on 28th July 2024, at 9am, for a walking tour that reveals the hidden history of Bugis Street. Once the epicentre of Singapore’s notorious nightlife, the vibrant and edgy past of Bugis Street is now a distant memory, hard to pinpoint on a modern map.

Few know that this area was also home to the Japanese Karayuki-san. “Little Japan” existed alongside the Bugis, creating a unique blend of cultures and histories. While they did not merge, they worked side by side, their stories interwoven yet distinct.

Understanding the plight of the Karayuki-san is one thing, but the rise and fall of the Bugis heritage and culture is a tale that’s harder to imagine, let alone explain. This tour delves deep into that story, offering insights and anecdotes that bring the past to life.

We will gather at Bras Basah MRT, Exit D/E (Waterloo Street) at 9am. From there, we will embark on a journey through some of Singapore’s earliest streets, once made of gravel and pebbles.

You will walk along “Si Beh Lor” – loosely translated as “Number 4 Horse Road” (Waterloo Street) – and explore the humble beginnings of Albert Street, which started as nothing more than a small, pebbly path.

Our tour will trace the evolution of the Bugis precinct, from its primitive years to its decadent heyday and finally to its current transformation into a vibrant arts and culture hub. Discover how Singapore plans to turn this historical area into a glitzy tourist destination that attracts both locals and international visitors.

Mark your calendar for Sun, 28th July 2024 and meet us at Bras Basah MRT, Exit D/E. Look for the guide with the Tourist Guide badge. This is more than a tour; it’s a journey through time that you won’t want to miss.

Don’t miss this chance to uncover the rich history and exciting future of Bugis Street.
