This cemetery is one of the most charming in Singapore. It’s not spooky at all and, if you see it in the right colours, it’s one of the most pleasant places to take a walk on the weekend.
Although it may seem old, it’s actually not very old – the last burial took place in 1973. In the last decade, Bukit Brown Cemetery has become a popular spot for dog-walking, jogging, and casual adventuring.
Today, I will take you on a tour that will go back as far as 1850. We’ll include a true story of how some of the super-rich made their fortunes, and how their descendants lost it all. We’ll also tell the story of the “unfortunate” death of pauper Low Nong Nong, which is seldom heard.
You’ll appreciate the great lengths our forefathers went to build our country, as we’ll “meet” some of the very rich, but also many of the very poor at Paupers’ Hill. Bukit Brown is a collection of little hills and knolls that hold a lot of history and some stories that are seldom told.
The pleasant, rustic, quiet atmosphere is an added bonus. We’ll meet at Marymount MRT at 8:30 am on March 17th, 2024, at Exit A, street level. The tour should end around 12pm, maybe 12:30pm.
