CHANGI VILLAGE HERITAGE TRAIL
Sat, 19th Oct 2024
9am to 11.30am

Join us on an immersive journey through the rich history of Changi Village. From its tumultuous past during the war to the peaceful, laid-back atmosphere of today, Changi Village holds a charm that’s hard to find elsewhere in Singapore. Once considered an almost forgotten enclave like Tai Seng Village, Changi boasts memories of a bygone era, full of heritage and nostalgia.

Changi’s history is deeply intertwined with its strategic military significance. During World War II, the area was heavily impacted by the Japanese occupation, and Changi Prison became an infamous symbol of wartime suffering.

However, post-war, Changi transformed into a thriving coastal village, with fishermen and local communities settling along its shores. Over time, it became a retreat for Singaporeans seeking an escape from the city’s hustle, known for its serene beaches and rustic vibe.

Despite being in the shadow of the bustling Changi Airport, the village has retained much of its old-world charm. While much of Singapore has undergone rapid development, Changi Village stands resilient. No large-scale Housing Development Board (HDB) estates have been planned here, leaving many to wonder if this quaint village will continue to preserve its unique character.

As we explore the village, we’ll ponder the future of Changi – how long will its tranquil charm endure? With the government’s “Long Island” plans on the horizon, what impact will these have on Changi’s identity? Will these changes bring a new vibrancy, or will they fade away the village’s historical essence?

Meet us at Upper Changi MRT station on Sat, 19th Oct at 9am to explore these questions. The tour will conclude at the Changi Village Hawker Centre, where you can enjoy local favourites.

Don’t forget to bring your bus card – we’ll be travelling by public bus to explore some hidden gems you may have never known existed.

This is an opportunity to experience the heart of Changi like never before. Book your spot today and don’t miss out on this captivating journey through time!
