Yishun is not the first housing project built by HDB. It came much later than some others. However, Northpoint Shopping Mall was the first major shopping mall constructed in the heart of a HDB residential estate.
The project was met with a lot of apprehension in 1992, but as time has shown, Northpoint Shopping Mall has been incredibly successful, undergoing major upgrading works. It now even boasts a multi-screen cinema complex, which was initially known as Yishun Ten.
Today, both the mall and cinema complex are well-known landmarks in Yishun. It’s hard to imagine that Yishun was once a mixture of farmland and pineapple plantations. Chong Pang Village, located nearby, adds to the charm of the local HDB market place.
Chong Pang Market is so vibrant that visitors come from all over the island to experience it. Currently, Chong Pang Village is undergoing major upgrading works, so the scene is set to change in time to come.
If you’re interested in taking a walk down memory lane, join me at Yishun MRT at 9am on Thursday, March 7th. The tour will end around 11:30am or 12pm at Chong Pang Village, where you can enjoy a traditional kampong lunch.
