CRIME, VICE & MURDER WALKING TRAIL
Sun, 24th Nov 2024
9am to 1pm

Join me on a captivating and intense walking tour as we revisit one of Singapore’s most infamous criminal events – the dramatic gunfight between the police and Lim Ban Lim, marking its 52nd anniversary today.

This tour will take us to the very spot in Queenstown where Lim Ban Lim, a notorious figure in Singapore’s underworld, died in a hail of bullets.

In the turbulent era between the 1950s and mid-1970s, crime, vice, and murder were rampant, and guns were tools of power – both for law enforcement and criminals. Kidnappings and daylight robberies were common, and Lim Ban Lim understood this all too well. He fought the police fiercely, his reputation in the underworld earning him the status of a “Robin Hood” figure, much like his predecessor, Oh Kim Kee.

Oh Kim Kee’s dramatic encounters with the police, including a deadly shootout at Sims Avenue in 1960, read like a scene from a Hollywood movie. His generosity to those close to him, much like Lim Ban Lim, cemented his place in underworld lore. Brothels even closed down to mourn the fallen Oh Kim Kee, a rare sign of respect in the criminal world.

On this tour, we’ll dive into these high-profile cases, recounting how some were solved with intense drama while others remain unsolved to this day. We’ll walk through the history of these events, from Lim Ban Lim’s final moments to the unsolved murder of Coco Ng, a tragic case from 2008.

We meet at Queenstown MRT station at 9am. Please take Exit B to your left and meet me at Taxi Stand F44. The tour will end at Flanders Square, near Farrer Park MRT, where we’ll relive the killing of Coco Ng, whose murderer is still at large.

Please note, this is a fairly long walking tour, expected to end around 1pm or 1:30pm. Bring your MRT card as we’ll be taking the train from Commonwealth MRT to Farrer Park MRT. Comfortable walking shoes and an open mind are highly recommended as we journey through Singapore’s darker history.
