Step into the vibrant world of Peranakan culture with us! Following the success of the 2008 TV series ‘The Little Nonya’, which captivated audiences across Singapore and Asia, the upcoming Mediacorp production Emerald Hill is set to premiere on Netflix on 10th March 2025. To celebrate, join us for a special walking tour of Emerald Hill on 8th March – just before the crowds descend!
The Peranakan culture, with its rich history and unique traditions, has long been a symbol of refinement and elegance. But how did it all begin? Some trace its origins to the arrival of immigrants after the founding of modern Singapore, while others believe it started with the legendary Hang Li Po, who became the fifth wife of the Sultan of Malacca in the 15th century.
Yet, evidence suggests that influences from as far back as the 10th century have shaped what we now know as Peranakan culture.
Once considered a mark of prestige, being Peranakan meant you were “one cut above the rest.” However, the culture began to decline after World War II, and by the 1970s and 1980s, the Nonyas and Babas – the last true-blue Peranakans – were fading into history.
While few live the traditional Peranakan lifestyle today, their legacy lives on in their exquisite cuisine, intricate fashion, and strong sense of community.
This tour is a chance to explore the heart of Peranakan heritage at Emerald Hill, a charming enclave that beautifully preserves this unique culture. From the iconic sarong kebaya to the tantalising flavours of Peranakan dishes, we’ll uncover the stories behind this fascinating way of life.
We’ll meet at 9am at Somerset MRT (next to the Citibank ATM) and end our journey at Scotts Road, near Sheraton Towers and Newton Hawker Centre.
While Emerald Hill may be a fictional series, our tour is rooted in facts, not fiction. Together, we’ll separate truth from myth and legend, and you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation of this remarkable culture.
Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with history, enjoy great company, and celebrate the enduring spirit of the Peranakan community. See you there!
