Step back in time and explore the hidden gems of Emerald Hill, once the heart of Singapore’s vibrant Peranakan culture. Today, it’s better known for its trendy bars and modern nightlife, but just beyond the first row of bustling drinking spots lies a world rich in history and old-world charm, often overlooked by passers-by.
Not long ago, Emerald Hill was a thriving Peranakan enclave, while nearby Orchard Road was just beginning to gain fame as a tourist hotspot. As Orchard Road grew, Emerald Hill slowly faded as a cultural hub. The Peranakan culture itself saw a decline from the mid-1960s, and despite efforts to revitalise it, success came in unexpected ways.
Join me on a walk beyond the surface, where we’ll uncover the heritage and beauty of this area. While the Peranakan influence has faded, many of the original shophouses carefully restored. This blend of history and contemporary life makes Emerald Hill a fascinating place to explore, offering a window into Singapore’s past while staying relevant in the present.
From Emerald Hill, we’ll take a scenic backroad to Monk’s Hill, where we’ll delve into the fascinating story of how the entire hill was moved to Balestier Plain. Though small, this area holds significant English history, including the origins of Peck Hay Road, a detail largely forgotten by many.
We’ll meet at 9am at Somerset MRT station (right after the control station). You’ll recognise me by my Tourist Guide badge. The tour will end at Newton Hawker Centre, where you can enjoy a local meal after our walk.
Come along and rediscover a piece of Singapore’s past!
