Join us on a deep dive into the fascinating history of “The Forbidden Hill”, better known today as Fort Canning. While much has been said about this iconic hill, we’ll go beyond the well-worn stories and explore the lesser-known facts and myths surrounding it.
In the past, Fort Canning was often associated with royalty and powerful figures. But on this tour, we’ll shift the focus to the everyday lives of the common people. How did the ordinary folk of the past feel about this hill, and what role did it play in their daily lives?
Today, Fort Canning is a beautifully manicured park, a green oasis in the heart of Singapore. However, this transformation came at a cost, as we lost some of the old-world charm, including the historic cemetery that once graced its slopes. Apart from a few plaques honouring notable individuals, there is little left to remind us that this hill was once the final resting place for early explorers who died while charting this part of the world.
Fort Canning could be the setting for many different tours—a nature walk, a World War II tour, or a historical tour of Singapore’s colonial past. But on this occasion, we’ll embark on an all-inclusive journey, covering a bit of everything as we go.
We’ll discuss the high and mighty, and we’ll also talk about the unsung heroes—the rank-and-file, like Chow Ah Chi, the carpenter rumoured to have been sent ahead by Sir Stamford Raffles as a scout before the British East India Company set foot in Singapore. Some say Raffles rewarded him with a house at 1, Lavender Street, but is it truth, fiction, or myth? Join us to find out!
We’ll meet on Sunday, 10th November 2024, at 9am at Dhoby Ghaut MRT (Exit B, street level). Our tour will end at the lively Funan shopping centre, once home to part of Raffles’ original botanic gardens—a little-known fact in Singapore’s history.
Come ready to explore, debate, and discover the hidden stories of Fort Canning!
