Join us for a morning walk through Geylang, a district often overshadowed by its infamous nightlife. We’ll explore the rich heritage and vibrant culture that define this historic area, revealing a side of Geylang many have yet to discover.
Our journey begins in the early to mid-1800s when Singapore was a bustling trading port. Communities initially settled around the Singapore River, but as trade flourished, entire populations moved to the Geylang and Kallang areas.
Here, life took root, with the Malays residing east of the rivers and the Chinese, escaping the congestion of Chinatown, settling to the west. These early inhabitants were modest people, living off the land through farming and fishing.
In the 20th century, Geylang experienced a cultural boom with the opening of notable amusement parks. Ong Sam Leong and his family inaugurated The New World Amusement Park in 1926, followed by The Great World Amusement Park two years later. In 1937, George Lee introduced Happy World, forever altering the district’s landscape.
Despite its current reputation, Geylang’s true essence is steeped in culture, heritage, and history. Amidst the bustling sex industry, one can still find a wealth of traditional eateries, temples, clan associations, and a fascinating blend of old and modern architecture.
The sex industry is just one aspect of Geylang, contributing to its economy but not defining its entirety. Our walk will unveil the myriad other livelihoods that thrive here, showcasing the area’s diverse and industrious spirit. Additionally, we’ll experience the red-light district in the tranquil morning light, a stark contrast to its lively nighttime persona.
Meet us at 9am at Kallang MRT, near the control station, on Saturday, 10th August 2024. Together, we will see Geylang in a new and enlightening way.
