Join us for a poignant journey through history as we explore the legacy of the Vietnamese Boat People in Singapore. For many, the word “Vietnam” evokes thoughts of vibrant holidays and adventure. However, for those who lived through the Vietnam War, it also calls to mind heart-wrenching memories of loss and struggle. Our walking tour will bring to light the stories of the Boat People – those who courageously fled Saigon in search of a better life.
Today’s focus will be on Hawkins Road, a site that no longer exists but holds immense historical significance. While the camp there might not seem like a sweet memory for all, it is important to remember the events of 1975 and the subsequent years, including the lasting impact felt up to 1996 – an era within living memory.
Your guide, Uncle Chris, has spent years learning about the Vietnam War and the plight of the Boat People. These narratives are filled with peril but also illuminating tales of survival – where some faced harrowing journeys, while others tragically perished at sea.
Landing at the Hawkins Road refugee camp was a fortunate turn for many. It was renowned for its warmth and hospitality, often described by former refugees as a refuge there, we’ll take bus service 856 to where Hawkins Road used to be. This tour will end at View Road, about 11.30am, maybe 12pm.
