Explore the Rich Heritage of Singapore’s Teochew Community!
Did you know that Singapore’s Chinese population is enriched by three major dialects: Hokkien, Teochew, and Cantonese? Join us on a fascinating journey as we delve into the heart of the Teochew community in Singapore. Once celebrated as one of the most refined groups, what remains of this legacy today?
Discover Au Kang (Hougang), famously known as a Teochew enclave, and uncover its hidden history. But Hougang isn’t the only place where the Teochews made their mark. We’ll also explore the now-defunct Stephen Lee Road, an enclave nestled in the heart of Mandai – a veritable jungle in its day.
The tale of the Teochew community at Stephen Lee Road is both poignant and inspiring. Their contributions to society have been immense, and we’ll highlight the unique perks and quirks of being Teochew.
As a special treat, we’ll visit the Japanese Cemetery at 22, Chuan Hoe Road. Much like Bukit Brown Cemetery, this site offers a rustic stroll through history, brimming with stories of joy and sorrow from the days of Karayuki-san and World War II.
