Immerse yourself in the rock & roll era of the 1960s and 70s!
Deep Purple, The Who, Led Zeppelin. Barbarella, Lost Horizon, and The Pink Pussycat. Ganja, marijuana, LSD. What do they have in common? Welcome to Orchard Road: Opium, Sex & Other Drugs Walking Tour.
Join us as we stroll down memory lane, exploring the drug-laden years of the 60s and 70s. Disco and rock didn’t start with Saturday Night Fever; their roots stretch back further, flourishing until an almighty decree declared “enough is enough.” Along with that, the DNA of our performing arts scene was forever altered. In 1973, Cliff Richard was denied entry into Singapore for his long hair. His choice was stark: cut it, or go home. He chose the latter.
Even the legendary Led Zeppelin, arriving in their private jet, were turned away. These were the heady days of drugs, sex, and debauchery – at least, according to some. Your ole Uncle Chris was a good boy then and still is, but I found my way to The Lost Horizon at Shangri-La.
Joe Chandran & The Xperiments were intoxicating, their hard music a soul-stirring experience. If you could leave The Lost Horizon unfazed, you had no soul. Even Pierre Trudeau, then Prime Minister of Canada and father of today’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, couldn’t resist the dance floor at Spot Spot in 1971. But alas, we lost that vibrant scene.
Even Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” was almost banned, not to mention “Smoke on the Water.” This tour will take us along the entire 2-kilometre stretch of Orchard Road, reliving its history, glory, pockmarks, and ruts.
Mark your calendar for 9am on Sun, 11th Aug 2024. We meet at Barbarella, Ming Court Hotel (now Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, 1 Tanglin Road).
The tour concludes at the other end of Orchard Road, once envisioned as The Butterfly Trail. Join us for an unforgettable journey through the highs and lows of Orchard Road’s past!
