Discover the rich, colourful world of the Peranakan culture on our unique walking tour. Many have heard the term “Peranakan,” but few truly know the origins of this fascinating blend of Asian cultures. Centuries ago, Peranakan heritage took root through the union of Chinese immigrants and local Malays, creating a distinct identity known for its elegance, cuisine, and vibrant traditions.
Some trace its origins as far back as the 15th century, to Princess Hang Li Po, who arrived from China as the fifth wife of the Sultan of Malacca, bringing along a grand entourage. Over generations, this merging of cultures blossomed into a remarkable legacy, deeply influencing fashion, cuisine, and customs.
Today, the Peranakan culture remains a proud, albeit fading, part of Singapore’s heritage. Though true-blue Peranakans are rare, their rich legacy continues to inspire, especially in the culinary arts. Peranakan cuisine is a unique blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indonesian influences that has become a staple of Singaporean food culture. Savouring these dishes is to taste history, and keeping this food tradition alive ensures the Peranakan story is never forgotten.
Our tour will delve into the beauty and spirit of Peranakan fashion, too, with its iconic sarong kebaya – a traditional blouse and skirt ensemble that speaks volumes of elegance.
While the style may not be as prevalent today, the Singapore Tourism Board is revitalising interest in Peranakan culture, especially after the TV series ‘The Little Nyonya’ in 2008 brought its story to screens across Asia and even into China. Peranakan fashion is timeless, and we’re confident it will continue to charm and inspire people around the world.
Join us on Sat, 14th Dec 2024, for a journey through Peranakan heritage. We’ll meet at 9am at Joo Chiat Complex and conclude around noon on East Coast Road. This tour is not just a walk through historic streets – it’s a journey into the heart of one of Singapore’s most treasured cultures. Let’s celebrate and preserve the Peranakan legacy together!
