CRIME, VICE & MURDER WALKING TRAIL
Sat, 2nd Mar 2024
9am to 1pm

Note that this walking tour is fairly long: Singapore is a very safe country today, but it wasn’t always like this. We’re going to visit the site of one of the most famous gunfights that happened in Queenstown between the police and a notorious gangster from the past. Queenstown used to be a new and upcoming town back then.

The period between the 1950s and mid-1970s was a turbulent time in Singapore. Crime, vice, and murder were common occurrences. Guns were a powerful tool used by both good and bad actors, and kidnapping and daylight robbery were almost like careers for some.

Lim Ban Lim was a notorious gangster who understood this situation very well, and the police had a hard time dealing with him. However, they were able to solve some cases on the spot, usually through a shootout, such as the infamous case of Oh Kim Kee.

Oh Kim Kee was a respected figure in the underworld, known as a “Robin Hood” type of character. His several escapes from the police read like a story out of Hollywood.

This case was eventually solved through a dramatic gunfight at Sims Avenue, which resulted in several brothels closing down as a mark of respect for the unofficial “Robin Hood”. Oh Kim Kee was known to be generous with those close to him, but despite his success, some cases remained unsolved for years.

Join us on a morning tour as we explore some of the solved and unsolved cases, which include high drama and quiet history. Perhaps we can assist the police in reopening some of these cases.

We will meet at Queenstown MRT station at 9 am and then take Exit B to your left. Meet me at Taxi Stand F44. Please note that this is a walking tour that will last until about 1 pm or 1:30 pm, ending at Flanders Square (Farrer Park MRT), where we will revisit the killing of Coco Ng, whose murderer is still at large.

Remember to bring your MRT card as we will be taking the train from Commonwealth MRT to Farrer Park MRT.
