Join me on the morning of 26th April 2025 at 9am, as we step back in time to explore a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Sembawang.
Meet me at Sembawang MRT, near the control station, where our journey begins. From there, we’ll embark on a 1.2km stroll along Canberra Road, passing through Bermuda Road, St John’s Road, Canada Road, and finally Durban Road. Along the way, you’ll experience the charm and ambience of an era long gone – the early 1900s.
It’s almost surreal to find such a strong British colonial influence just steps away from a modern HDB estate. As we walk, you’ll get up close to some of the most stunning Black and White Houses, complete with their historical war bunkers. These architectural treasures, though mostly tenanted today, offer a glimpse into a bygone era. Canberra Road, once a narrow two-way lane, has been widened over time to accommodate modern infrastructure. However, as we turn onto Bermuda Road, you’ll notice how much of the area has remained unchanged since the early 20th century.
This walking tour will transport you to the 1920s and 1930s, offering a rare opportunity to connect with history in a way that feels personal and immersive. It’s hard to believe that this peaceful enclave, with its quiet streets and colonial charm, lies just a stone’s throw from the bustling Sembawang HDB estate.
Our journey will conclude at the infamous “The Strip,” a place once known for its lively – and sometimes rowdy – atmosphere during the 1960s. From here, you can choose to take a bus back to Sembawang MRT or stay behind for lunch at one of the local eateries. After all, what better way to end a morning of exploration than with a satisfying meal?
