Unlike Balestier and Holland Village, Tai Seng Village often goes unnoticed by walking tours. However, Tai Seng, as it is affectionately known, boasts a rich and well-documented history.
Originally a small village within the expansive Perseverance Estate, Tai Seng began as an agricultural hub. Early villagers engaged in farming nutmeg and gambier before transitioning to self-sustaining practices and eventually becoming a prominent centre for lemongrass cultivation.
Predominantly inhabited by Teochews, Tai Seng earned the nickname “Charn Mau Herng.” Despite its pastoral roots, Tai Seng was notorious for its crime-ridden past. From the 1940s, poverty drove crime rates to unprecedented levels, leading to the proliferation of gangsters and secret societies.
The establishment of Paya Lebar Airport in the 1950s marked a turning point for Tai Seng. The once tranquil village transformed into a bustling hub of commerce and industrialisation.
This remarkable evolution saw Tai Seng rise from humble beginnings to a thriving centre for multinational corporations. Today, companies like DHL and BreadTalk have their offices here, ensuring Tai Seng’s place in history as a true rags-to-riches story.
Join me for a walk through the modern Tai Seng and experience its fascinating transformation.
Meet me at Tai Seng MRT at 9am on Sunday, 18th August 2024. Upon arrival at Tai Seng MRT station, head towards Exit C in the direction of 18 Tai Seng. Take the escalator up to street level, where I will be waiting next to Hawker Chan. You can easily recognise me by my Tourist Guide Badge.
Our tour will conclude at a charming, old-fashioned bread-making shop, where you’ll have the chance to take home some delightful homemade coconut buns. Trust me, you’ll love it!
