Discover the fascinating history behind Singapore’s land reclamation projects, which began long before 1965! Join us for a unique walking tour on 9th Nov 2024, as we explore how much of our modern city was shaped by these massive undertakings, starting as early as the 1800s.
Did you know that Raffles Place was once a hill? The hill was excavated to fill the banks of the Singapore River, while “Scandal Point”, at what is now the Padang, was flattened to reinforce the sides of Queen Elizabeth Walk. Our senior citizens may remember this spot as “Gor Chang Chew Kar” (in Hokkien), meaning “beneath the five trees.” Although those iconic trees are gone, the memories and stories remain.
Telok Ayer was another massive land reclamation project. What is now a bustling street was once right on the coastline. Many of our ancestors first set foot in Singapore at Telok Ayer beach. This means all the land and roads beyond Telok Ayer today were once part of the sea. As we walk, you’ll notice how the streets bend, tracing the original shoreline.
Together, we’ll follow the paths our ancestors once took, exploring the trades they worked in and the cultural heritage they carried from China and beyond. After all, Singapore is a nation built by immigrants, with its rich, multi-faceted heritage.
Meet us at Raffles MRT (in front of The Arcade) at 9am on 9th Nov 2024, for an intriguing journey through Singapore’s history. The tour will end around 11am, or possibly 11:30am, leaving you with a deeper appreciation of the incredible transformation this city has undergone.
Don’t miss out on this chance to uncover the hidden history beneath the streets of modern Singapore!
