THE BUGIS PIRATES & THE BAWEANESE HERITAGE TRAIL
Sat, 20th July 2024
9am to 11.30am

Discover the Hidden History of Bugis and Baweanese Communities!

Did you know that the former Bugis Street was renowned for its vibrant transvestite and transgender history? Most of us are familiar with Bugis Junction as a shopping haven, but its past holds much more than meets the eye.

Join our walking tour to uncover the rich history of the Bugis and Baweanese people. While many think of Bugis as pirates, they were also skilled traders and seafarers, bringing us delicacies like sea cucumbers in the early days. The Bugis, originating from Indonesia, thrived until the Dutch East India Company altered their fate. Similarly, the lesser-known Baweanese community, also from Indonesia, made significant contributions with their unique skills.

Although their numbers have dwindled, the Bugis and Baweanese communities are still present today. The older Baweanese, in particular, regularly return to their homeland, Bawean Island, also known as “Pulau Putri” (Island of Women), as most of the men have sought work abroad—a tradition dating back to the Dutch East India Company era.

On our tour, we’ll explore the former Baweanese village and understand why the British called them “Boyanese.” We’ll delve into the lives of the Bugis people and challenge the notion of them being mere pirates. You’ll also discover why Bugis Street earned its reputation as a “transvestite village.”

Join us on this captivating journey through history! Meet us at 9am at Rochor MRT, Exit B (junction at Perak Road) on Sat, 20th July 2024. The tour concludes at Kampong Bugis.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the fascinating heritage of Bugis and Baweanese communities. See you there!
