THE EVOLUTION OF SINGAPORE’S HDB FLAT DESIGNS
Sun, 29th Sept 2024
9am to 11.30am

Join us for an insightful walking tour exploring the evolution of Singapore’s HDB flat designs. Toa Payoh, the Housing Development Board’s (HDB) first residential project, benefited from the lessons learned at Tiong Bahru and Queenstown, developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT).

HDB has progressed rapidly to modern-day projects, overcoming a few hiccups along the way. Today, we’ll explore how HDB flats have evolved over the decades, from simple quick fixes to the current skyscrapers at Dawson Road and Margaret Drive.

In the past, flats at Dawson Road were slab-sided and low-rise, built with minimal luxuries, focusing on sanitation and ease of use. Health was a major consideration then. Today, our flat designs have advanced significantly.

We’ll discuss the state of HDB building programmes, including interior and exterior designs. Our town planners now consider factors like climate change, sun direction, and wind direction.
It would be fascinating if they could truly create a forest out of Tengah!

Fun Fact: It’s rumoured that the chickens at Cantonment Road have finally learnt how to cross the road!

Meeting Point: Toa Payoh MRT, 9:00am on Sun, 29th Sept 2024. Upon alighting at Toa Payoh MRT, head towards Exit A (left) and take the escalator up. I will meet you at Toastbox, and you can recognise me by my Tourist Guide badge.

We can end this tour at the dizzying height of the 45th floor at Dawson Road or come down to earth at Commonwealth Drive at Block 115, Singapore’s very first flatted factory. Please remember to bring your MRT card as we’ll be taking the train from Toa Payoh to either Commonwealth or Queenstown MRT.

Join us for a journey through the history and evolution of Singapore’s HDB flats!
