Most tour guides will share the pleasant, academic story of Tiong Bahru, a staple on the tourist map. But in reality, Tiong Bahru wasn’t always this pretty or neat. I will be your whistle-blower, revealing the inside story – warts and all.
Tiong Bahru was one of the first areas where the government attempted to solve the housing problem of the past. Things didn’t always go according to plan, but fortunately, Tiong Bahru has a fairy tale ending. Eng Hoon Street, once known as “Mistress Lane,” is now being revitalised and partially pedestrianised.
This enclave is lucky to have much of its old architecture conserved, maintaining its quaint, rustic feel. However, there’s a big question: will blocks 18 to 28 along Tiong Bahru Road be conserved too? If they are demolished, things may never be the same again.
For now, we’ll enjoy its old-world charm and nostalgic atmosphere.
Meeting Point: Tiong Bahru MRT station, 9:00am, Sun, 22nd Sept 2024. Look for me at Toastbox in the atrium. The tour ends around 12pm, just in time for lunch at the old Tiong Bahru Market.
Note: For many residents and tourists, blocks 18 to 28 along Tiong Bahru Road serve as a façade and entry point to the entire enclave. Without these blocks, the old-world charm might be lost to modern anonymity.
