TOA PAYOH HERITAGE TRAIL
Sun, 5th May 2024
9am to 11am

Step back in time as we unravel the captivating history of Toa Payoh. From its humble beginnings as a vast swamp, this neighbourhood has transformed into Singapore’s pride in housing for the common folk.

In 1960, the Housing Development Board (HDB) emerged, determined to reshape Toa Payoh’s destiny. Inspired by earlier projects in Tiong Bahru and Queenstown, HDB embarked on a monumental task – the creation of a thriving community.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Cultural nuances, heritage challenges, and livelihood intricacies coloured the journey.

Toa Payoh, designed to accommodate 250,000 residents, faced unexpected twists. Why did the grand vision fall short? Join us on this immersive tour as we explore the trials and tribulations behind this colossal housing project.

Fast forward sixty years and the landscape has shifted. HDB applicants now wait just a few years for their turn.

Let’s meet at Toa Payoh MRT on Sun, 5th of May 2024 at 9am. Look out for the escalator to your left upon alighting – it leads to the street level, right in front of Toastbox. I’ll be there, enjoying my breakfast. If you arrive early, let’s share a coffee together!
